Real Books Vs Audio Books - What Do You Prefer?

The physical feel of a book in your hands is great, but is it better than hearing the story read to you? Let me weigh in...

Us book lovers, know few things compare to the joy of a new book.

We are currently living in a time where you can enjoy the same book in various ways, whether it's listening on streaming apps like Audible or the iPhone book app or having a physical (real book) copy. I'm left wondering does one stand out over the other? Let me tell you what works for me and I wonder if you feel the same?

It wasn't until my son was born that I really started using audio books along side real books.

When you are parenting during the first 5 years of a child's life you don't get much time to yourself. Having the option of listening to an audio book over the real book was such a blessing to me. I was able to get things done while I listened to the story or non fiction advice from motivational speakers or gurus.

The Benefits of Real Books

Holding a book in your hands is unlike anything else. It's like finding treasure. You feel it's weight, enjoy the cover art and of course that new book smell! What I love about real books is it allows me to keep a library and display everything I've read or plan to read. It's also a great conversation starter when my friends pop over, because they can see what interests me with a single look.

Keeping my library lets me see exactly how many books I own....It's a lot! shhhhh don't tell my husband! Honestly It's also a source of pride to see all my book shelves filled. I get lost in my study sometimes from jumping around books.

The Benefits of Audiobooks

Audiobooks are perfect for us word nerds. When most of us are constantly on the go we don't need to be stationary to enjoy them. Audiobooks live on the device you choose to listen to them on - mine is my iPhone. I enjoy them everywhere as long as my iPhone is with me - which it is all of the time.

As I don't need to hold an audiobook in my hands, this opens the door to multitasking - a win for us parents or busy people. We can listen to a book while driving, cooking, cleaning, or generally doing chores around the house. Listening to a book before bed is pretty cool because we can "read" the book in complete darkness. Audible lets you set a timer to stop after a certain time frame giving you the freedom to drift off if you get sleepy.

What I've found works for me is if I want to get through a challenging book that requires a lot of my attention. I buy two copies - the physical book and the audio version. This opens the option to switch between the two formats and get more reading done in a shorter amount of time. Using this method gives me the opportunity to reference the physical copy, when an inspired thought or an a ha moment happens, while listening to the audio version. It really lets me digest the Information I'm receiving.

So basically I'm a die hard fan of books in any format! I just love taking a book with me as it paves way to an excellent escape whenever I have to wait for something or someone.

I guess it boils down to this...when you have a busy day full of house chores travel or work, an audiobook is the best choice. When you want to take a break and enjoy some reading, a physical copy is what you want.

Tell me, do you agree with this? What works for you? Let me know in the comments.

I hope you currently have a great book to read or listen to!

Love,

Emma
